Horton Hears a Who

Posted : 15 years, 4 months ago on 6 December 2008 02:43 (A review of Horton Hears a Who! (Widescreen and Full-Screen Single-Disc Edition))

Horton Hears a Who has a lot of the original elements from the book, which I really enjoyed and appreciated. I loved the book growing up, so was definitely looking forward to the movie, and I was impressed with the job that was done in making this come alive off the written page. Great cast of actors, with lots of well known comedic actors, a good job done on the expansion of the story. I have now decided to buy this when it comes out on Tuesday so that I can watch it with my daughter, and I am positive she will want to see it again and again. I know I won't mind seeing it a few more times :)

The X-Files: I Want to Believe

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 1 December 2008 09:57 (A review of The X Files: I Want to Believe (Single-Disc Edition))

Pretty good movie. I just finished watching it, and while it is not as "out there" as most of the stories on "The X-Files", or even the first movie, it is still well written, directed, and acted. I liked that they brought Mitch Pileggi in as well, near the end. Despite how well this movie was done, I do hope it is the last, that this has closed the door on any future movies. Mulder and Scully are getting older, and shouldn't be chasing around after monsters. They should get to retire and live their lives :)

when the movie does reveal what is really going on, it's disturbing - which is no surprise, but it's a really good twist, and I quite enjoyed it, though I did have to pause the movie and come back to it, just because I was tired of watching it, since it does take a while to get to what is going on (because it's not wrapped up neatly in a one-hour episode, I guess....or because I was exhausted!!).

Wanted

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 1 December 2008 09:51 (A review of Wanted)

This movie has some great special effects, from start to finish. The biggest drawback for me was the fact that Angelina Jolie is in this movie. She doesn't do that great of a job with her character. Any actress could have played the part, and I am sure there are a number of others who would have done a better job.

Aside from that, I think the effects are better than the story. The story is decent, the movie is good. It's just not the best thing I have seen - but it does have some of the best effects I have seen recently. It's a solid action movie, for sure.

Hancock (Unrated Single-Disc Edition)

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 29 November 2008 08:34 (A review of Hancock (Unrated Single-Disc Edition))

Hancock starts out strong, a good movie, great cast. Loved Jason Bateman's character! Hancock was definitely more fun when he was being a jerk, but I like the idea of reforming him, cleaning up his image. Some of the effects were noticeably CG...can they not come up with better graphics in this day and age? It just takes away from the movie to have it be THAT noticeable when it isn't really necessary. The story for Hancock is good - until close to the end of the movie, when Will Smith and Charlize Theron are in the hospital. I don't like including overt spoilers, so I won't, but the story has some issues at that point...then it comes back together and ends well. Overall, a good enough movie. One I wouldn't mind seeing again later on.

Pushing Daisies Season One

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 29 November 2008 08:28 (A review of Pushing Daisies: The Complete First Season)

I finally got a chance to watch the whole first season...brought it home after being told the show has been cancelled, which is disappointing, especially since it's a great show. Well written, great cast of actors (& a great cast of characters!). Smart, funny, entertaining, definitely keeps you coming back for more. Can't wait to see season 2, however many episodes they air (I hear it will be all 13 but who knows). I want to add this to my permanent collection because I will definitely be watching it again! Lee Pace was an excellent choice for the lead character (also loved him on "Wonderfalls"...another show that was cancelled!).

Tropic Thunder

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 14 November 2008 10:16 (A review of Tropic Thunder)

Unlike the review posted for this movie's description, I was not stupid enough to think that the opening minutes of this movie were anything BUT the opening minutes of the movie...because the fake commercials/previews are so over-the-top ridiculous, you would have to be a complete idiot to believe that they are for real products/movies.

That being said, I loved this movie. It was so funny from start to finish.
Well written, completely ridiculous, but really well done, with a great cast of actors, including Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black, Nick Nolte, Brandon T. Jackson, Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughey, Jay Baruchel, Steve Coogan, and Danny McBride....and cameos by Christine Taylor, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jason Bateman, Alicia Silverstone, Lance Bass, and Jon Voight.

A great comedy/action film.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 13 November 2008 02:10 (A review of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (Widescreen Edition))

This sequel to an okay first movie is only so-so. It got a bit annoying, all the talk of how special the pants were, and how they keep the girls together....instead of the girls actually working to be friends, and realizing that, with them going off to separate colleges, they would of course grow apart at least a little bit as they met new people and had new experiences. The characters are annoying in this movie, because they don't seem to want to grow up.....I hope this is the last movie for this franchise, because unless the characters undergo a LOT of growth, I refuse to watch another of this kind of movie. I knew I shouldn't have taken it home, based on what I could see of the movie on my store's trailer tape (just a lot of whining that doesn't seem too appealing), but I decided to give it a go anyway...and now I wish I hadn't!

Room 6

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 12 November 2008 08:15 (A review of Room 6)

This movie is horrible. I took it home knowing it would be bad, but I thought it wouldn't be THIS bad, since Christine Taylor and Jerry O'Connell are both in it, and it is a fairly recent movie, but....well, the movie was awful. A bad story, bad dialogue, terrible acting from everyone, dumb effects. Just lame. Not even scary at all, and the ending sucks. Okay, the whole movie sucked.

If you're thinking of seeing this one, DON'T!!

Asterix at the Olympic Games

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 9 November 2008 10:10 (A review of Asterix at the Olympic Games (Astérix aux jeux olympiques))

As a huge fan of the old Astérix and Obélix comics, I have wanted to see any of these live action movies for a long time, but have never seen them in any video store I frequented. This week, however, my work got this title in, so I made sure to bring it home when I got the chance...and I wasn't disappointed. It is exactly like watching the comics come to life, with all the corny dialogue, great effects, and a great cast of actors portraying all the favourite characters from the comics!

The movie is in French (with English subtitles) OR dubbed in English, and since I was tired and didn't feel like reading subtitles, I watched the dubbed version, but really enjoyed it anyway and will probably watch it again, subbed next time. And I hope I can find more of these movies, because if they are all like this one, I can't wait to see more :)

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 9 November 2008 09:50 (A review of Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Widescreen))

An excellent sequel to an excellent first movie. Guillermo del Toro was able to do so much more with this second Hellboy film (and I sure hope for a third one!) because he was given more $$ :). With elements reminiscent of the also excellent film, Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy II is full of great action and fight sequences, as well as a great story that keeps you watching from beginning to end...and looking forward to more when it comes to a close.

I really enjoyed this sequel, perhaps even a bit more than I enjoyed the first movie, which doesn't happen often with sequels. Usually the sequel disappoints, but not in this case!
