New Girl review

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 6 October 2011 03:06 (A review of New Girl)

Zooey Deschanel is completely quirky/zany/crazy in a fun to watch and thoroughly entertaining way in this new comedy. Hopefully FOX keeps it alive, as I definitely have enjoyed what I have seen so far, and look forward to a lot more to come. Solid writing, a solid cast, an awesome and loved lead actress, so far, a good recipe for a good show. On a night where there's little to choose from aside from dramas and reality shows, this grabs the attention and holds on.

Beverly Hills, 90210 review

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 4 October 2011 06:10 (A review of Beverly Hills, 90210)

Watching this show used to be a weekly ritual amongst my circle of friends, as we grew up watching the characters on this long running drama grow up. I saw every episode, and even during some of the rougher patches of the series, I never missed an episode, and watched it again and again while it was still being shown in re-runs. Recently, it came to Netflix (in Canada), and I have begun the show again.

Yes, it's dated, but it's still much, much better than the current incarnation of the series, which I cannot stand. Yes, it's gooey, feel-good, learn a lesson scripts are a little harder to stomach after many years away from the show, but I still love it, and will keep watching it. The cast was well chosen, the writing was good for the time, and the show was just overall, strong, and it taught us something while we watched. I miss TV like this these days, where we are swamped with a bunch of badly written, badly cast, and terribly acted shows.

A Gifted Man review

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 4 October 2011 06:04 (A review of A Gifted Man)

When the pilot began, and I saw it was set during a surgery, I groaned and thought, "not another medical drama". But, as the show progressed, and there was very soon an unexplained event in the main character's life, I was intrigued, and most definitely, much happier that this show wasn't about some egotistical jerk of a surgeon.

It's about much more than that, and after watching the first two episodes, I am hooked and definitely cannot wait to see where the show goes, or how the main character grows and develops as the show progresses. Patrick Wilson does an excellent job, and Julie Benz is also on the show as his sister (in a so far lesser role, but hopefully we see more of her).

Revenge review

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 3 October 2011 07:17 (A review of Revenge)

For me, after watching only the pilot, the only things going for this show are a) Madeleine Stowe, and b) Nick Weschler. That's it. The show is filled with a bunch of actors cast in roles I don't care about, the premise of the entire show is dull and weak, it's not well written, it's not well acted (aside from the two actors I already mentioned), and I just don't care enough about the people on the show, let alone the main character, who is boring and one dimensional (both the character so far, and the actress), to really want to proceed any further...

... except that Madeleine Stowe, one of my favourite female actresses is part of this show, so I will be forced to stick around and keep watching it for a little while longer, but I definitely hope it gets cancelled, and she moves on to better projects that people would actually want to sit through.

Ringer review

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 3 October 2011 07:12 (A review of Ringer)

I am SO glad to see Sarah Michelle Gellar back in a TV series, and while it is the second show on the air (that I both know of and have watched) that has a plot about twins switching places and some deep dark secret (the other being "The Lying Game"), "Ringer" is by far the better show out of the two to sit down and watch (the other being a waste of time with bad acting and bad writing with the only bright spot for that show being Adrian Pasdar).

"Ringer" also includes Kristoffer Polaha and Ioan Gruffudd, as well as Nestor Carbonell, all familiar faces. And Sarah Michelle Gellar is, of course, doing a great job with her dual part. I am hooked after two episodes, and hope it gets to continue and reveal more and more of the underlying story and secrets. The show is dark, which I enjoy after watching a bunch of very fluffy and terribly written "dramas"...and has some good writing. Don't know yet if it's more than solid and good (as in, I don't know if I could say it's excellent), but after the initial two episodes, I am left wanting more.

Suburgatory review

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 3 October 2011 07:07 (A review of Suburgatory)

The pilot episode was actually quite strong and well written. I love several members of this cast (Alan Tudyk, Jeremy Sisto, Ana Gasteyer, and Cheryl Hines), so I will definitely be coming back for more, and with a solid start to the series, hopefully a lot of people will be doing the same, so it can have a fair chance to either take off, or flop.

A lot of familiar faces from the world of TV (and the bigger screen too), from well established TV favourites (SNL, Weeds, Six Feet Under, for instance), so hopefully that, paired with some good writing, and a decent time slot, will help keep this one alive.

How to Be a Gentleman review

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 2 October 2011 12:05 (A review of How to Be a Gentleman)

I don't really like the main character on this show. I find his voice annoying. And the fact that they are trying to (or seem to be trying to) bring another suit-wearing blonde male character (yes, the guy kind of resembles NPH vaguely) to the TV audience...I don't think it's going to work out, despite the fact that Kevin Dillon and Dave Foley are also members of the show's cast, and it's got Fred Savage listed as a director.

I just don't like it, based solely on the pilot so far. And it's most just because of the main actor's voice, I think. I hope the show gets cancelled, honestly, because I don't really see it having much success.

Whitney review

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 30 September 2011 03:46 (A review of Whitney)

Just checked out the pilot, and I must say, I have zero interest in continuing any further. Yes, the show has some funny moments, but the characters are just overwhelmingly annoying. The writing isn't overly witty or smart...it sometimes borders on disgusting (like asking if having sex with a pregnant woman counts as a threesome).

This is one show I hope bites the dust, and soon...but it might very well end up being a long running sitcom, as there's no accounting for the taste of the audience, or the intelligence of the people in control of such things.

One Tree Hill review

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 28 September 2011 09:08 (A review of One Tree Hill)

This show is just average, has been from the start. It sucked me in at a time when I had nothing better to watch, and I have kept watching ever since, but I really, really wish they would end it already, as I feel the need to see it through to the end (like a bad soap opera), but they just keep dragging it on past its prime, which wasn't even that good to begin with. Adding Daphne Zuniga made it moderately more interesting, but she only came in once both Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton left the show, and honestly, I bet most of the fans wish they hadn't left, as I know I was watching for their storylines, not anyone else.

Season 8 has way too much sappy, syrupy garbage, a lot of hugging and fist bumping, to the point of just being ridiculous. You could make a drinking game just based on taking a drink when you see either of those two things, and be drunk mid-episode. the powers that be need to lay this one to rest before they get the not-so-bright idea to fast forward the show another five years, which was, in a word, stupid.

Possession review

Posted : 13 years, 2 months ago on 28 September 2011 09:01 (A review of Possession)

Not terribly suspenseful, scary, or unpredictable, "Possession" is, at best, a half-decent watch when you're bored and have nothing else to watch. Because it had both Sarah Michelle Gellar and Lee Pace in it, I gave it a go, but it took two sittings to watch the entire movie, as it just didn't capture enough of my interest to make it through the whole thing the first time I sat down to watch it, which was a shame, because I like both the lead actors, and that's the only reason I bothered to come back and finish the movie.

If not for them, I wouldn't have bothered, as I already figured it out early on, and the ending was just stupid.
