Emile

Posted : 17 years ago on 27 April 2007 05:15 (A review of Emile (2003))

This was a good film, which I took longer than planned to watch. I remember when it was being filmed here in Victoria - mostly because I was going to school when the crew invaded our campus....a campus that was used for the "university" exterior shot, yet is on the college campus and was not credited in the movie. Yet, the University is in the list of special thanks. Go figure.

This is an excellent film about a man trying to reconnect to the last members of his family, after travelling from England to Vancouver Island (Victoria) in order to be presented with an honorary degree. There are a lot of flashbacks to his past, and the flashbacks are well done, and flow really well with the story line in the present.

Waiting for Guffman

Posted : 17 years ago on 27 April 2007 05:13 (A review of Waiting for Guffman)

"Waiting for Guffman" has an excellent cast, full of great comedic actors like Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Fred Willard, Brian Doyle-Murray, among others. And of course, Christopher Guest is great in this movie, which he also directed.

This is a wonderful mock documentary (mockumentary) about a small town about to celebrate their 150th anniversary, the play that is to be performed, its actors....and how they are waiting for Guffman, a critic from New York they all think may help them get to Broadway.

All the actors in the play are looking for a bit of fame, and the play itself is hilarious. This entire movie is extremely well done, very funny, and I could watch it over and over again.

Magnolia

Posted : 17 years ago on 27 April 2007 05:12 (A review of Magnolia)

"Magnolia" is extremely well done. With a well-assembled cast including William H. Macy, Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly, and more, the characters are excellently acted. The story is great, and I could watch this movie over and over again just for the music, which is by Aimee Mann and completely fabulous.

I love watching this movie, even despite the fact that a couple of the actors in this movie are not my favourite actors. It is a great film, with a great story, cast, and music.

Mindhunters

Posted : 17 years ago on 27 April 2007 05:11 (A review of Mindhunters)

The premise of this movie is interesting - however, the movie overall kind of falls flat. It IS watchable, but the group of profilers-in-training are supposed to be a promising group of individuals - special, better than the others.

Yet, not one of them is able to figure out the pattern behind the killings until late in the game. Mistrust quickly builds among a group who know each other quite well, but it's not well played.

A group of people who are being trained to solve puzzles and profile killers can't even catch on - even a little bit - to what's happening to them until a number of them have become victims.

The murders are gruesome and interesting, for the most part - but that, coupled with the mind games - are about the best things this film has going for it.

When the killer is finally revealed...what a disappointing turn of events. Predictable way to end the movie. If you are paying attention, you can see this revelation coming LONG before it actually happens.

Yes, this movie DOES have a good deal of suspense, but it is also fairly predictable.

Annie

Posted : 17 years ago on 27 April 2007 05:10 (A review of Annie)

This is a great movie, and appropriate for the whole family. I hadn't seen this movie for years, and watching it again reminded me of just how much I love this movie.

It has great music, a great cast, and is a great story.

Dumbo

Posted : 17 years ago on 26 April 2007 10:21 (A review of Dumbo)

Older Disney movies are still just as good as I remember them being when I saw them as a child. Dumbo is one of my favourites---who couldn't love this movie about a baby elephant with gigantic ears, who is ridiculed by everyone except his mother and his best friend, a mouse?

Dumbo isn't even his given name---it's a nickname given by one of the other elephants while they are making fun of him. This is a sweet movie, with a touching scene --- Dumbo and his mother together while "Baby Mine" is being sung.

My daughter, being introduced to the movie for the first time, loves the "Elephants on Parade" sequence. This is a movie that stands the test of time, and is well loved by everyone who sees it.

Cinderella III

Posted : 17 years ago on 26 April 2007 10:20 (A review of Cinderella III: A Twist in Time)

While I had wondered what if someone else had fit the glass slipper...that isn't exactly what this story is about. Yes, one of Cinderella's step-sisters fits the slipper this time around, but only because of magic---my idle wondering was what if someone else fit the slipper honestly!

Anyway, this movie is decent enough, story-wise. The songs are a little annoying and don't seem to have had a lot of thought and effort put into them. It is worthwhile to watch if you have children, and I know my child loves this movie and has watched it multiple times since we brought it home two days ago.

Overall, I still prefer the original "Cinderella" to this third movie. We have yet to see the second movie, but if it is anything like this, I won't bother owning it!

Good family movie, but doesn't come close to the quality of the original.

Buffy Season 8 # 2

Posted : 17 years ago on 26 April 2007 02:45 (A review of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8: #2)

The second issue came out, and I made sure I bought it (both covers again), the day it was first available.

I read it once I got home, and found I was still far from thrilled, although the story has progressed a bit, and I can't wait to find out what is going to happen next.

I do love that the character I dislike the most---that annoying, whiny Dawn---has been turned into a giant (who is still a whiny, selfish brat).

I will continue to buy this series, and I have no doubt it will continue to get better as the story unfolds.
