The Dukes of Hazzard

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 6 May 2007 07:43 (A review of The Dukes of Hazzard)

Probably the only thing I enjoyed about this movie was the car...and any driving scenes with the car.

Other than that---Jessica Simpson is awful, and they should have left the original show alone. I loved the show...again, because of the stunts with the car (and I am a girl:))

As a purely stupid comedy, this movie is great---even includes completely pointless nudity (as if college girls all walk around half naked), I assume in the unrated version only.

Sure, it's somewhat entertaining, but really, if you have any interest in seeing The Dukes of Hazzard----watch the show.

The original cast was much better.

A Knight's Tale

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 5 May 2007 10:23 (A review of A Knight's Tale)

This movie, while definitely entertaining, is pure fluff---not to mention, annoying with the current songs and suggestive dancing that would not have been seen during the time period portrayed in this movie.

The character of Chaucer (played by Paul Bettany) is a much needed dose of comic entertainment, but really isn't needed for the story.

I have seen this movie a couple of times, and even though I am definitely NOT a fan, it is watchable if you put your brain on pause and forget all you might know about the time period.

I guess, while deciding the soundtrack for this film, someone thought it would be utterly brilliant to use songs from the recent past, but every time one of those songs starts up---and, for example, the dance scene gets completely ridiculous---, I just roll my eyes and wish whatever genius made that call....hadn't!

The Wicker Man (2006)

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 5 May 2007 05:23 (A review of The Wicker Man)

This movie was long, drawn out, and tough to sit through. Did I mention that it was predictable---I had never seen or heard of the original, but I definitely saw the end coming.

Not a great movie at all. Cage's character is just plain stupid, stumbling around like a complete idiot screaming "Rowan" for most of the movie, and pushing himself in people's faces just because he's a cop. Right at the beginning of the movie, he overhears mention of "The Wicker Man", but when he finds out about the pagan rituals/festivals on the island, not once does he ask about this.

As a cop, he isn't any good...he doesn't make any connections and try to figure things out the way anyone would, using information that is given to him. And, Willow, his ex-fiancee, tells him right at the start, not to trust anything that he hears or sees. Anyone with a brain would include not trusting her right then and there.

All the people on the island are predictable, and Ellen Burstyn kept reminding me of Louise Fletcher (who I am glad didn't play the role).

This movie was completely terrible from start to finish, should never have been made (it does nothing for any of the actors' credibility)---but it does have a couple of "shocking" moments if you aren't fully paying attention to the movie (which I wasn't---it being so bad!).

The 'Burbs

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 4 May 2007 05:33 (A review of The Burbs)

Watching this movie for the first time on DVD (have seen it before, many times), I was reminded of how much I loved watching the old Tom Hanks comedies---you know, all those movies he did BEFORE he started doing all the Oscar-worthy movies.

This is an entertaining movie from start to finish. Some of the residents of a suburban area start to wonder about a strange family no one has met in the month they have been living in the neighbourhood, and when an elderly neighbour disappears, the paranoid ideas start flying.

Meeting the strange neighbours---who truly are strange---doesn't help matters. Instead, Tom Hanks and two of his neighbours end up with a plan to find "evidence" that the Klopeks killed the old man.

I love this movie, and could watch it time and time again. It is a quotable movie. Oh, and Corey Feldman adds extra entertainment to the movie with his character, who brings all his friends out to watch the antics of the neighbourhood residents while trying to uncover "evidence" that the new residents are evil.

Saw III

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 3 May 2007 08:16 (A review of Saw III)

I really wish they would have left "Saw" alone after the first movie. The first one was excellent, with an actual story that was well done. Yes, it was gruesome at times, but it was full of suspense, and left you guessing until the end.

The second movie, in comparison, was NOT good. Despite this, I picked up the third movie the other day, since I have seen the other two. Right from the start, I was less than impressed. Bad acting, predictable story---and not a good story either.

They really need to stop making these movies. All they are doing now is showing gruesome, graphic violence while wrecking what was once a great idea for a film.

Bandidas

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 2 May 2007 05:37 (A review of Bandidas)

While I am not a big fan of either Salma Hayek or Penelope Cruz, this movie, from the start when I saw Penelope Cruz playing Tic-Tac-Toe with her horse (who cheats), showed me that I was likely to enjoy it.

With a great cast that includes Steve Zahn, Sam Shepard and Dwight Yoakum (playing a sleazy, greasy character), this movie was just what I needed while looking for a comedy fix.

The Analyst

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 30 April 2007 05:54 (A review of The Analyst)

I just finished reading this book very early this morning. While it started off slow for me, the story was intriguing, so I stuck with it.

An analyst, about to start his yearly vacation, discovers a threatening letter, in which he is given an interesting choice: Play a game that involves figuring out the name of the source of the threat within fifteen days----if the analyst is unable to do this, then he must either kill himself, or live with the knowledge that not killing himself will result in the destruction of the life of a relative.

The book is fast-paced for a lot of it, but at times, drags a bit. I was only about halfway through the novel when the fifteen days were almost up, so I ended up figuring out what was going to happen (a little predictable there), but still a good read.

It definitely kept my attention despite the slow parts of the book. Well worth a read, for anyone who enjoys suspense.

Buffy the movie

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 30 April 2007 11:06 (A review of Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

I recently sat down to watch this movie again (have no idea how many times I have seen it by now!). While the movie and the TV series have very little in common, both are enjoyable for different reasons.

The movie (which came before the series) is entertaining, funny, and---if you keep it separate in your mind from the show---a good story (written by Joss Whedon). The story isn't as good as other material written by Joss Whedon...and if you do compare it to the show, there is a lot that is different between the movie and the beginning of the series---but, those differences are easily overlooked by any fan.

The Buffy movie is funny, decently acted (not high caliber quality acting, to be sure), and decently produced.

This movie also has quite a cast of actors, including Kristy Swanson, Luke Perry, Paul Reubens, Rutger Hauer, David Arquette, Hilary Swank, and Donald Sutherland.

Shaun of the Dead

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 30 April 2007 10:56 (A review of Shaun of the Dead)

I sat down and watched this movie for a second time this past weekend, and I could watch this movie over and over again. It is a great take-off on George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead", with a great story that is both hilarious and a bit digusting at times.

I was quite pleased with this movie overall---it is a rare movie these days that can grab...and hold...my complete attention for more than a few minutes at a time.

This one will be added to my favourites list for sure.
