Buffy the musical soundtrack

Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 16 May 2007 11:27 (A review of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Once More, with Feeling)

This soundtrack is excellent---for an excellent episode, and one of my favourites, for sure!

I LOVE this CD, and play it often. It was my favourite present from a friend. And, I have been able to use it to prove that, indeed, there IS a line saying: "Hey, I'm not wearing underwear"....people who have only seen the episode do NOT believe me, but it is there.

Joss Whedon is truly talented, and sure came up with something very special with "Once More, With Feeling". If you are a fan, this is definitely a must-have.

Great music, great lyrics, along with some extra music from other episodes of Buffy---all makes for one CD that is definitely worth the sticker price!

Buffy Season 8: #3

Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 16 May 2007 03:52 (A review of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8: #3)

I bought this the day it came out, once again...and it took me all of about two minutes to read. The quick read for each issue might be a large part of the reason I am not quite as excited about this comic series as I had hoped I would be.

When you are used to an approximately 42 minute long episode which you can watch on TV....reading an "episode" in two minutes or less isn't going to be as satisfying.

However, the story is still interesting, and entertaining (who awakens Buffy with the kiss of recently realized love, for example....and giant, annoying, Dawn).....but I find that the "Buffyspeak" isn't as convincing read off a page and not heard spoken.

(and the variant cover...the other one...sucks this time around!).

Close to Home cancelled

Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 16 May 2007 02:58 (A review of Close to Home)

After just two seasons (which is not enough of this show), it looks like CBS has given "Close to Home" the axe. The good news? The show didn't end with a cliffhanger....it ended in such a way that the recent news of a cancellation doesn't really leave people hanging.

I enjoyed this show...but I am not surprised it has been cut. Maybe if it had been given a better night than Friday night at 8...who knows?

Graveyard Alive: A Zombie Nurse in Love

Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 14 May 2007 07:24 (A review of Graveyard Alive: A Zombie Nurse in Love)

This movie tells the story of an unattractive (and unpopular) nurse who is pining away over the handsome doctor - who is taken. After a patient is admitted to the hospital with an axe in his head (and still alive), nurse Patsy is not only kissed by this patient, but also bitten.

The hospital's janitor realizes that the patient is a zombie...and meanwhile, our nurse is slowly changing into an attractive and increasingly popular woman at the hospital.

This is a romance story, as well as a comedy (and zombie movie), which is slow moving and seems much longer than it actually is. Apparently, this movie was originally intended to be a silent film, but was later dubbed. Overall, the movie is not bad - it's not the best movie I have ever seen (or the best zombie movie), but it is definitely not the worst.

If you like zombie movies (and cult movies), you might want to check this one out.

Hair

Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 13 May 2007 04:24 (A review of Hair)

"Oh, say can you see my eyes... if you can then my hair's too short!"

What an excellent musical, featuring Treat Williams at his best. This movie has it all, music, nudity, drugs, dancing, draft dodging...

The second song in the movie is awesome - why DO those words sound so nasty? Also, later in the movie is a song about black boys and white boys....with the black boys sung not only by white girls, but white men in army uniforms....and white boys sung about by black girls and black men in army uniforms---and how delicious the boys are. Cracked me up:)

Don't miss a young Nell Carter----AND a younger Charlotte Rae, who is so into the performance at of the dinner party crashers that she doesn't mind being pulled up on the table and dancing with Treat Williams.

If you are a fan of musicals---not to mention the '60's----then check this movie out. It has great music with a good story....that has quite the twist at the end.

Close to Home

Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 13 May 2007 02:31 (A review of Close to Home)

An excellent show, Close to Home started off strong, with a great cast. Jennifer Finnigan is a great choice for the lead actress of the show...and Christian Kane has a smaller role as her husband (for season one only).

This show has had two seasons now, both with emotional season finales. The show is done by Jerry Bruckheimer, and airs on CBS, and I can't get enough of the show, which tells the story of a crime each week --- and the resulting trial --- from the view of the prosecuting attorneys, investigators, and various other characters on the show.

Season two continued with Annabeth (Jennifer Finnigan's character) dealing with the loss of her husband---while at the same time introducing new characters to the show (David James Elliot and Jon Seda---along with Cress Williams).

I particularly like the relationship between Jennifer Finnigan's character and Bruce Davison's. They are good friends who work on opposite sides of the legal table, but through everything, they are there for each other, especially in times of tragedy.

And, the second season finale was tense, and forced Annabeth to once again deal with a major loss.....and the episode had more than one major character's life in danger.

Season two also briefly saw Jonathan Silverman (Jennifer Finnigan's fiance) added to some of the later episodes (and Eric Stoltz put in guest appearances in a few episodes at the end of the season as well) as Annabeth's boss' campaign manager.

I cannot wait to see what will happen with this show in the third season (I really hope it returns). And I hope the show becomes available on DVD soon, as I would like to re-watch season 1.

Will & Grace season 1

Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 12 May 2007 09:24 (A review of Will & Grace - Season One)

This was a good, strong start to a well written, and well cast series. NBC had a great period where it had strong comedies with a lot of fans.

Will & Grace only had four main actors, and I know I looked forward to this show each week, and followed it as long as I could---until I gave up cable!

Re-watching season 1 just reminded me of why I love this show and its characters. The dialogue is well written, witty....and never fails to make me laugh at all the right moments.

It also has its dramatic moments....and some awesome guest stars...more and more as the series goes on.

Anyone who loved shows like "Friends", "Frasier", "Mad About You" should definitely give this show a try.

Early to Bed, Early to Rise

Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 12 May 2007 06:15 (A review of Bear in the Big Blue House - Early to Bed, Early to Rise)

This is a compilation DVD of some of the episodes of the show "Bear in the Big Blue House"....all revolving around the subject "early to bed, early to rise".

I think "Bear in the Big Blue House" is a good show for children, and when I gave up cable, I definitely missed having the Treehouse channel to keep my daughter entertained in the mornings!

But, "Bear in the Big Blue House" is some quality programming, with good stories, with lessons learned, and a story/song each episode. The characters are cute (even if they do get annoying to the adults after repeated viewings), and this DVD is definitely a favourite in this house, having been seen over and over...and over...etc.

Beetlejuice (not Beetle Juice)

Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 12 May 2007 04:30 (A review of Beetlejuice)

Ah...Geffen and Tim Burton. What a combination. Throw in the music of Danny Elfman AND Michael Keaton at what might possibly be his finest (definitely his most memorable role!).....and you have one of the best movies out there.

Okay---this movie ALSO has Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, Sylvia Sidney, Jeffrey Jones, Catherine O'Hara (and Robert Goulet!), among others.

This movie came out in 1988, and Alec Baldwin is so young, it's hard to believe it's him in this film:)

I have loved this movie since the first time I saw it, and my enjoyment and appreciation of this movie definitely has not decreased over time.

The cast grouping is perfect. Michael Keaton's character (Beetlejuice, of course) isn't even the most bizarre character in the entire movie.

The dinner party scene is one of my favourite scenes in the entire movie (I don't like to include spoilers if it can be helped).

The movie isn't scary (except, perhaps, to a younger child). It is dark, funny, gross, and also contains some colourful language at times.

RoboCop

Posted : 17 years, 7 months ago on 11 May 2007 03:15 (A review of RoboCop (1987))

I just sat down to watch this movie again for the first time in at least a few years, and I still enjoy this movie just as much as I remember enjoying it in the past.

It is definitely an action movie, with lots of gunfire, blood, and some gruesome (yet funny at the same time) scenes.

It seems a bit dated now, 20 years later....but I think the cast is great, including Peter Weller, Miguel Ferrer, Kurtwood Smith, and Ray Wise.

If you are a fan of action movies, this is definitely one to watch.
