Buffy Season 8 #1

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 26 April 2007 02:41 (A review of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8: #1)

After finding out that there would be a season 8 of one of my favourite shows, in comic book form, I was intrigued, but not sure whether I would buy it. But then I found two stores locally which still had copies, so I broke down and decided to buy it (I do own all seven TV seasons on DVD, so might as well!).

I couldn't wait to read this first issue, but when I finally got a chance to do so, I wasn't as thrilled as I had been told I would be.

The story is interesting, the artwork is excellent, but so far, the story is not doing enough to keep me entertained. But, perhaps this is because I am used to the show, and am not much of a comic person. I am planning to keep buying the comics, and have hope that it will all come together nicely.

The comic, despite my being not so impressed at this time, is still worth reading if you are a fan.

Dumbo

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 26 April 2007 02:32 (A review of Dumbo (Big Top Edition))

Older Disney movies are still just as good as I remember them being when I saw them as a child. Dumbo is one of my favourites---who couldn't love this movie about a baby elephant with gigantic ears, who is ridiculed by everyone except his mother and his best friend, a mouse?

Dumbo isn't even his given name---it's a nickname given by one of the other elephants while they are making fun of him. This is a sweet movie, with a touching scene --- Dumbo and his mother together while "Baby Mine" is being sung.

My daughter, being introduced to the movie for the first time, loves the "Elephants on Parade" sequence. This is a movie that stands the test of time, and is well loved by everyone who sees it.

Heroes

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 22 April 2007 02:03 (A review of Heroes)

I had not watched any of this show until last night (a few days before the show returns with its final episodes of the season), and once I got started, I found it difficult to stop watching!

I knew before I saw any of it that I would enjoy the show, so I made sure I got all episodes of the show, and saved them until I had time to watch. I am SO glad I waited until I had multiple episodes to watch.

This show is excellent. Tim Kring, who also does "Crossing Jordan" (another favourite of mine), has created an extraordinary show that is well written, and has a well-assembled cast...and good special effects.

Each episode leaves me wanting more, and this is a show I will definitely want to add to my collection when it comes out on DVD! This is absolutely one of the best shows on TV today, and I hope it continues as strong as it started, and comes back with a second season as good as the first!

Heart-Shaped Box

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 22 April 2007 01:58 (A review of Heart-Shaped Box)

This novel is well written, and reading it actually reminded me of reading Stephen King's earlier work. No big surprise there, though, as the author, Joe Hill, is one of Stephen King's sons! And I am not saying that Joe Hill is a Stephen King copycat, just that his writing reminds me of his father's early work!

Hopefully Joe Hill keeps writing quality novels like this one. The lead character in this story buys a ghost on the Internet, and once it arrives, all hell breaks loose.

I loved this book, found it hard to put down...and only wanted more of Joe Hill's work to read after I was done. Having none, I turned to Stephen King's "Skeleton Crew".

Annie

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 8 April 2007 08:18 (A review of Annie )

This is a great movie, and appropriate for the whole family. I hadn't seen this movie for years, and watching it again reminded me of just how much I love this movie.

It has great music, a great cast, and is a great story.

Mindhunters

Posted : 16 years, 12 months ago on 8 April 2007 05:53 (A review of Mindhunters)

The premise of this movie is interesting - however, the movie overall kind of falls flat. It IS watchable, but the group of profilers-in-training are supposed to be a promising group of individuals - special, better than the others.

Yet, not one of them is able to figure out the pattern behind the killings until late in the game. Mistrust quickly builds among a group who know each other quite well, but it's not well played.

A group of people who are being trained to solve puzzles and profile killers can't even catch on - even a little bit - to what's happening to them until a number of them have become victims.

The murders are gruesome and interesting, for the most part - but that, coupled with the mind games - are about the best things this film has going for it.

When the killer is finally revealed...what a disappointing turn of events. Predictable way to end the movie. If you are paying attention, you can see this revelation coming LONG before it actually happens.

Yes, this movie DOES have a good deal of suspense, but it is also fairly predictable.

Dead Sleep

Posted : 17 years ago on 30 March 2007 04:22 (A review of Dead Sleep)

This book is not bad. I found the beginning to be a bit slow, so it took me a while to get into the story...but I am glad I stuck with it.

The ending is a bit predictable, but the overall story is pretty well written. The characters are well constructed, and as a reader, I felt I learned enough about them (not too much) as the story developed.

However, I DID skip ahead to the back of the book, to see who was behind the crimes, to confirm what I already knew, but by that point, I was already engrossed, and spent one late night finishing this book.

I wouldn't call it a favourite, but it is definitely entertaining, pretty well written, a good plot, and a reasonably decent finish to the story.

Worth reading:)

Freddie Mercury Solo Collection Boxset

Posted : 17 years ago on 30 March 2007 07:47 (A review of Freddie Mercury Solo Collection 1973-2000)

This set, which has 10 CDs, and 2 DVDs - not to mention a beautiful oversized book - is my one of my most prized possessions.

It is an excellent compilation of Freddie Mercury's solo work, both the music and the music videos. I love this set, and have owned it for almost 10 years now (the release date was not 2002---I bought it in 1998 or 1999 after saving up for months).

It is a must have for any Freddie Mercury fan.

Dummy

Posted : 17 years ago on 28 March 2007 07:18 (A review of Dummy)

"Dummy" was a movie I had never heard of, but found while browsing the shelves of my video store. I didn't know what to expect from the movie, since I didn't read the summary, but I am glad I watched this movie.

It is a good movie about a man who decides to pursue his dream of being a ventriloquist, and the challenges he faces in pursuing that dream (which are, admittedly, few).

As the story develops, we learn about more about the main character (who seems a little slow at the start of the film, but is revealed to be an intelligent man with a great sense of humour), his sister (both still live at home), his unemployment counsellor, his only friend from high school, and a bit about his parents.

The casting was well done for this movie, and the acting is excellent. The story is also well done, and I found myself drawn into the movie from the start. This is a great movie that people should really find the time to watch.

Magnolia

Posted : 17 years ago on 24 March 2007 04:39 (A review of Magnolia (New Line Platinum Series))

"Magnolia" is extremely well done. With a well-assembled cast including William H. Macy, Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, John C. Reilly, and more, the characters are excellently acted. The story is great, and I could watch this movie over and over again just for the music, which is by Aimee Mann and completely fabulous.

I love watching this movie, even despite the fact that a couple of the actors in this movie are not my favourite actors. It is a great film, with a great story, cast, and music.
